How do we know God? And who is the God who can be known? As Europe was once more tearing itself apart, Karl Barth was asking these questions not as some intellectual speculation or idle game but in order to remind the Church that it had its own specific task to perform. Were these questions to be answered correctly, the Church would be strengthened in its mission to serve humankind, which had been elected in Christ to be God’s own covenant partner and friend.
